Tenons in 10 Seconds

Return to Ken's Home Page

I made this table top tenon jig from a plan in Woodsmith magazine many years ago and it has served me well. I venture to say I have cut many hundreds of tenons with it. As a matter of fact I also used it to cut mortises until I purchased a benchtop mortiser.

This picture is from the rear and shows a small Makita router mounted horizontally on a plate which is adjustable in the up and down direction. The bottom of the fixture is a closed box with a hole cut to insert my shop vac hose for chip and dust collection. By using different size straight bits and varying depth/height adjustments, most size tenons can be cut quickly, clean, and super accurate. I had my grandson time me making tenons for some bookcase face frames. The tenons were cut in less than 10 seconds (all 4 sides).

This pic is from the front which shows a miter slot parallel to the rear fence.

Four passes are made as shown in the following photos (no set-up change required)

The resulting tenon is shown in the next 2 photos. QUICK, CLEAN, ACCURATE

The plans for this jig can be found in Woodsmith's issue # 67
